Council has been trying to figure out how we can make Wellington St safer for everyone without being forced to block vehicle use.
On Tuesday 12 May 2026 we voted 7 to 2 to proceed as follows:
1. Re-paint the bike lanes as a priority.
2. Improve the Hodgkinson St roundabout with better lighting and a raised pedestrian crossing.
3. Upgrade the pedestrian crossing at Clifton Hill Primary School.
4. Reduce speeds to 30 kmh in West Clifton Hill.
5. Narrow the centre islands in the Alexandra Parade intersection to stop cars being ‘pushed’ into the bike lane.
6. Add head starts so cyclists can get across Alexandra Parade safely.
7. Assess how to return a safe left hand turn at Alexandra Parade for vehicles.
8. Improve footpaths throughout Collingwood and West Clifton Hill.
9. Add pedestrian crossings to reduce speeds.
10. Undertake community consultation for potential turn restrictions into Wellington St.
11. Add more trees and plants to the centre median strip in Collingwood.
12. Improve sight-lines to make turning at intersections safer.
